Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest 2023
Over the last two weeks I was busy selecting photos for the Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest 2023. Then I had to upload the photos and a description had to be entered for each photo. This was a bit of a painful process, as some of the fields are redundant. Also, I had to add at least one tag. Which is weird, because you are not selecting a tag from a list, you can enter whatever you want. So, I don’t really know how the tags would help them. What if a spelling error happens? Pretty bad way how they implemented tags.
Then the information about the contest on the website was all over the place. Depending on where you were looking on the website, they forgot to update the dates to this year’s contest as they just copied/pasted the text from a contest they previously ran. I was a bit surprised as the Smithsonian Institute is a pretty big organization with lots of resources and that shouldn’t happen. Seems all these issues are now corrected as I contacted them via e-mail to figure out what the actual right information is.
This year, for the 21st annual photo contest, the following categories were available.
- Drone/Aerial
- Artistic
- The American Experience
- People
- Travel
- Nature World
Every photographer was allowed to enter up to 15 images per category for a total of 90 images if you only select one category per picture. But you can also enter a picture into multiple categories at the same time.
Let’s see if I have a shot to land anywhere. An honorable mention would even be amazing and would mean a lot to me. The grand price is $2500 which I value less just for being the grand prize winner or even be in the top 10. Many amazing photos have been submitted.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able so far to figure out a way to get a link to just all of my uploads. As of today, 18 of my 57 uploaded images have already been approved for the contest. The rest is still pending approval. I can imagine how big the backlog is to approve all the images.
Winners of the Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest 2023 will be announced early 2024. Keep your eyes open and of course, I will update you guys here on how I did if I find out.
