Reading Time: 2 minutes
This was the first time that I captured a total lunar eclipse since I captured the Beaver Blood Moon in November of 2022. Don’t confuse it with the Wolf Supermoon which I captured in January of 2026 in Germany. A supermoon is when the moon is at its closed point to earth and therefore appears bigger than normal. A blood moon is just another word for lunar eclipse. This means the earth moved between the moon and sun. It is possible to have a Super Blood Moon but these are very rare.
This blood moon occurred on March 3rd, 2026 and was widely visible in the Americas.
Thanks to my new gear, the Canon R5 Mk II and an amazing lens, I was able to capture my best pictures yet of the Blood Moon.
During the time of the blood moon, I would be in Las Vegas. I was looking for cool locations which I could integrate together with the moon for an even better picture. Didn’t really find any possible composition. I wanted to use a super telephoto lens to get the compression effect but the moon would be also very high up in the sky during the phase of totality and even higher while leading up to totality.
So I just decided to go all in and zoom to 600mm and get as tight of a shot as possible of the moon. I photographed the different stages of the lunar eclipse. Because my composition would be very simple, I didn’t had to drive anywhere. I just walked outside and stood in the parking lot of the hotel to take the pictures.
I was also the only person who cared about the blood moon. Only a few people came outside the hotel at the time of the eclipse happening and none of them cared for the eclipse. I think its truly spectacular what nature shows here.
The first few shots, i was able to capture handheld, but for the shots during totality I set up my tripod. I set up the tripod next to my car to get cover from the wind gusting every now and then. I tried to get as short of an exposure as possible without going insane on the ISO. The maximum ISO I went to was 5000. Not to bad for the R5 Mk II and thanks to modern software noise reduction.
What do you guys think about the photos? Do you have any good tips to share with others? Let me know in the comments.
