Canon sent me a notification about issues with certain SanDisk SD cards. I received the notification because I registered my new R5 Mk2 with Canon, especially for CPS. It’s always good to register your Canon gear.
If you haven’t heard about it yet, there is an issue that still images can be recorded corrupt or abnormal in combination with the following SanDisk SD cards.
- SanDisk Extreme PRO® SDXC™ UHS-II V60 64GB
- SanDisk Extreme PRO® SDXC™ UHS-II V60 128GB
- SanDisk Extreme PRO® SDXC™ UHS-II V60 256GB
Here is Canon’s statement about the issue. Canon’s notification links to the SanDisk website where the solution to the problem is a replacement of the card by contacting the card manufacturer warranty service.
The process should be straight forward and quick as it is a big issue SanDisk is fully aware of. I had an CF card from them fail on me a while ago. Thanks to SanDisk’s amazing warranty, the defective CF card got replaced for free and it was quite quick.
You can read all about my experience with the SanDisk warranty service here.
On the one side I don’t understand why in such a powerful camera is still a SD card slot. The second slot should have been a CFexpress Type B card as well. They are not that expensive anymore and are just so much faster. They are also available in even bigger capacities which is especially useful if you are using the R5 for video.
I am super happy with my OWC 1TB CFexpress Type B card which I am using since day one. I have so much storage on this card, I don’t think I will ever run out of space even when pre-shooting is enabled.
