The advantages of registering your product with the manufacturer is that you get notifications about firmware updates. Canon emailed me about a new firmware update for my camera, the EOS R5 Mk II.
The new firmware brings the R5 Mk II to version 1.2.0
Changelog
Here the official changelog from the Canon website.
Firmware version 1.2.0 incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:
- Adds support for the EOS Multi Remote, a remote shooting system for professional photographers. For an overview and specifications of EOS Multi Remote, please refer to the Canon website: https://ssw.imaging-saas.canon/app/app.html?app=emr
- Fixes an issue that in some cases caused the live-view to appear distorted or an Err70 notification being displayed in situations when the user was capturing a multiple exposure shot in a dark environment.
- Fixes an issue in which image transfers to an FTP server may fail, displaying Err41.
- Fixes an issue that, in rare instances, may prevent certain CFexpress cards from being formatted in the camera.
- Other improvements to system stability.
Conclusion
Nothing really exciting is mentioned in the changelog which would make me update right away. Since Canon had some issues with the last few firmware updates, I will wait a few weeks to see what happens. In July 2025, Canon had to rollback an earlier update for the R1 and R5 Mk II because of some issues. I am also going on a trip for a few days and I know how my camera behaves in the moment and haven’t had any issues. It would be bad, going on a trip and then stuck with more problems than before without a way to downgrade. Fixes for such issues also take usually a few weeks. Even if it would be only days, my trip would be most likely over.
I also would love Canon to explain the 5th point on their list “Other improvements to system stability”. Because this can be anything and nothing. A few more details would be great even though to see if the issue was happening on my system.
Besides the R5 Mk II, firmware updates for other cameras also got released including the just announced Canon EOS R6 Mk III which has yet to ship. The list includes
