Biometric photos are required for most official IDs nowadays, especially passports and visas. A biometric photo is just a fancy term for the norms of how the photo of you has to look. It follows specific standards which have been around for a very long time now. There are some differences for certain countries, like the form factor the photo has to be, but in general, the look of the person on the photo is the same.
